High-concept horror film “Rosario” is getting a stellar cast. David Dastmalchian (“Oppenheimer“), José Zúñiga (“Twilight”), Diana Lein (“Fear the Walking Dead”), Paul Ben-Victor (“The Irishman”) and Emilia Faucher (“CODA”) will join rising star Emeraude Toubia (“Shadowhunters”) in the pic.
Penned by Alan Trezza (“We Summon the Darkness”), the story, set in New York, revolves around Rosario (Toubia), a successful Wall Street stockbroker who is trapped in her estranged grandmother Griselda’s apartment during a snowstorm. Griselda has died, and supernatural forces possess her corpse. Rosario, now the target of a deadly family curse, must battle her past to save herself and her soul.
“Rosario” marks the feature debut of Colombian filmmaker Felipe Vargas, a DGA award-winner for his viral horror short “Milk Teeth,” which has led to projects with Paramount, Sony and Lionsgate. He was named one of 10 Latino Content Creators to Watch by Variety last year.
Colombian-Venezuelan cinematographer Carmen Cabana, whose credits include “Ms. Marvel,” Netflix’s “Resident Evil” and “Narcos,” will lens the pic.
“Rosario” is produced by Silk Mass’ Jon Silk and Mucho Mas’ Javier Chapa and Phillip Braun. The film is executive produced by Highland Film Group’s Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier, as well as Toubia, Bruce Barshop, Vincent Cordero, Simon Wise and Kristopher Wynne.
Mucho Mas Media is financing and producing the film while Highland Film Group is handling worldwide sales at the AFM. Production starts mid-November in Bogotá, Colombia, under an interim SAG-AFTRA agreement. “We cannot wait for cameras to roll on this smart and chilling film in the vein of the Blumhouse movies,” said Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser.
